Head Coaches that SHOULD be on the Hot Seat

The regular season is over, and now it’s time to jump knee-deep into the offseason. The first step is always the head coach. Athletic directors and school boards cannot wait to make the next move to championships, or whatever the clichés are.

Things happen fast in college football. Big-time jobs are now up for hire, and big-time names are looking for a new home.

As of Sunday, schools owe fired head coaches $118 million to not coach anymore, which is a record high. Jimbo Fisher left Texas A&M for ‘more than’ $75 million (Bleacher Report), which will be paid out until 2031. Tom Allen leaves Indiana for $20 million, and Dana Holgorsen splits from Big 12 newcomer Houston for nearly $15 million.

But some coaches should (or could) be fired for what they’ve, or more importantly, have not done.

Dabo Swinney - Clemson

Dabo has had a phenomenal run at Clemson, bringing championships, great players, and unforgettable moments, but his time is coming to an end. NIL has been a tough scene for Swinney so far, and it does not seem like he will be adapting anytime soon. His buyout is reportedly anywhere from $57-64 million for the next five years. I understand that Dabo is royalty down in South Carolina, and he has done a great job, but recently they have not been competing for the National Championship.

Potential Replacements: Brent Venables (Oklahoma) or Pat Narduzzi (Pitt)

Mack Brown - North Carolina

Brown’s second tenure with the Tar Heels has been successful. In his five years since returning, he has led UNC to a 38-26 record and five bowl-game appearances. But Brown is getting old; he is 72 and he isn’t getting any younger. Yet he continues to tell the media he plans on returning with the team next season. What Brown has struggled with is taking advantage of great quarterback play. Sam Howell was, at one point, the projected number-one overall pick in the NFL Draft before he came back to school. Drake Maye is a top-three projected pick in this year’s NFL Draft. What does the school have to show for it? They have not won an ACC Championship in football since 1980. The school should go big or go home. If you buy out Mack Brown, it has to be for someone big.

Potential Replacements: Jimbo Fisher (Previously Texas A&M) or Sherrone Moore (Michigan OC)

Ryan Day - Ohio State University

Urban Meyer should be disgusted. I can just imagine him saying, “The Buckeyes don’t lose to the school down the road.” Yet it seems like Ryan Day cannot find a way to beat Michigan. This year was by far the worst, with no Harbaugh on the sideline and Michigan in the midst of a cheating scandal. Ryan Day had a chance to erase these past three years of Michigan dominance but he couldn’t win the game that mattered most. Day has a coaching record of 56-7, yet he is 1-3 against the Wolverines. He does have a crazy buyout number of $46.22 million. Is it worth it? Would you find somebody better? And Would Ohio State fire a coach for not beating one team?

Potential Replacements: Urban Meyer (Fox Sports) or Brian Hartline (WR Coach)

Courtesy of the Idaho Press  Eric McAlister was a 3-star prospect in the class of 2021 (0.8600 rating via 247Sports) from Azle, TX where he was named District Co-MVP in 2020. Transfer Portal Watchlist: RB Deion Hankins

But after back-to-back losing seasons, Hankins has hit the transfer portal.  He was a member of the All Conference-USA FreshmanTeam in 2020 and the  All Conference-USA Second Team in 2022  Rushing for over 800 yards on 157 attempts (5.2 yards per carry) along with five touchdowns, Hankins contributed to a majority of the Miner's success on the ground this year.  While watching Hankins you can see he is a bruiser coming from the backfield, almost like a wrecking ball. Hankins looks for contact. Zappe Time?

No Mac, no problem? Not so fast, but Bailey Zappe could be a guy.  The Patriots fell victim to Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay on Sunday, 27-24 in overtime. All things considered, the game turned out much better than most Patriot fans expected with Mac Jones out. Brian Hoyer was slated to start and did until Isaiah Wynn decided to become a revolving door and let Rashan Gary blow up his shoulder.  In stepped Bailey Zappe, a fourth-round pick out of Western Kentucky. In his last season at WKU, he passed for over 5,900 yards and 62 touchdowns, which are both NCAA records.  Zappe overall played well over expectations, completing 10 of 15 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown.  Much like Mac last year, Zappe was not given the opportunity to really let the ball fly.
