Rafael Devers May Have Saved the Red Sox Off-Season

It might happen. 


The Red Sox have a chance to do something AMAZING.


They could do what the fans, players, executives, and analysts have been saying to do for the entire offseason. 


The Red Sox have a chance to sign Jordan Montgomery. 


On Monday morning, Buster Olney reported that Jordan Montgomery and the Boston Red Sox ‘recently met over Zoom. 


Six days ago, Rafael Devers said in his press conference that the team “needs to be more conscious of what are the weaknesses and what we need right now.” Naturally, the reporter asked,  “What do you need right now?” 


Devers’ response?


He laughed and said, “Everybody knows what we need, you know what we need and they know what we need. It’s just some things that I can’t say.”


Well Rafael, thank you for saying that. The Jordan Montgomery to Boston train seemed like it had halted in its tracks. No words came from Boston, nor Montgomery’s camp about a potential signing until this. 


I think this shows how much sway Rafael Devers is starting to have in this locker room. Devers is only 27, yet he’s been in the big leagues for seven years, and off the heels of a 10-year $313 Million contract he signed in 2023. 


Devers is a leader and the voice that matters obviously. Dustin Pedroia had FaceTimed some of the Red Sox front office and sent a very clear message that he was not content with how the offseason was going. Pedroia mentioned the current free agents and “what opportunities might be out there,” Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy said. 


Two players calling our their current and former team isn’t good, how about a third? 


Kenley Jenson went to the ‘Baseball Isn’t Boring’ Podcast and said, “I came here for two years where Year 1 we were going to compete but by Year 2 they were really going to go for it… They have a different vision now.”


Nothing came from it. However, when Devers speaks, it appears the Red Sox listen. 


Montgomery went 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP through 67.2 innings. 


Could there be a signing on the horizon?

Transfer Portal Watchlist: RB Deion Hankins

But after back-to-back losing seasons, Hankins has hit the transfer portal.  He was a member of the All Conference-USA FreshmanTeam in 2020 and the  All Conference-USA Second Team in 2022  Rushing for over 800 yards on 157 attempts (5.2 yards per carry) along with five touchdowns, Hankins contributed to a majority of the Miner's success on the ground this year.  While watching Hankins you can see he is a bruiser coming from the backfield, almost like a wrecking ball. Hankins looks for contact. Zappe Time?

No Mac, no problem? Not so fast, but Bailey Zappe could be a guy.  The Patriots fell victim to Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay on Sunday, 27-24 in overtime. All things considered, the game turned out much better than most Patriot fans expected with Mac Jones out. Brian Hoyer was slated to start and did until Isaiah Wynn decided to become a revolving door and let Rashan Gary blow up his shoulder.  In stepped Bailey Zappe, a fourth-round pick out of Western Kentucky. In his last season at WKU, he passed for over 5,900 yards and 62 touchdowns, which are both NCAA records.  Zappe overall played well over expectations, completing 10 of 15 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown.  Much like Mac last year, Zappe was not given the opportunity to really let the ball fly.
