Return of the Mac

The Playoff is set. Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, and TCU are the best teams in the country and one of them will be crowned National Champion in January.  Championship Saturday claimed one final victim before the playoff could be decided. USC needed to beat Utah to win the Pac-12 and to make their first College Football Playoff. They were tied close with Utah for most of the game, but fell behind in the fourth quarter and couldn't catch up, ending up losing 42-27. Caleb Williams and Lincoln Riley will have to wait another year to try and prove the move from Oklahoma to USC would work.  Now let’s talk about the teams that made it: 1. University of Georgia Georgia has basically held the number 1 spot in the playoff poll for two consecutive years. Kirby Smart led his Bulldogs into Atlanta for the SEC Championship and rolled over LSU dropping over 50 points. Dear Ohio State,  What did I just watch? You got your brains beat in for 30 minutes in the second half after, almost, completely dominating the first half.  Stroud was throwing the ball downfield to start the game and it was working, so why’d you stop?  Marvin Harrison Jr, Julian Fleming, Emeka Egbuka, ever heard of them? Maybe throw them the ball more than six yards down the field. Egbuka was running free in the first half and then got CLAMPED coming out of the half.  Ryan Day also decided to play the field position game, punting on 3rd and 6 from the Michigan 43. Hey Ryan, your defense could not do a thing against JJ McCarthy or Donovan Edwards. Ronnie Bell looked like a hall of famer with how much respect he was getting from the refs. Your safeties and cornerbacks were useless out there. Florida at Vanderbilt halftime coverage had some fireworks that lead to maybe Peter Burns never talking with Benjamin Watson again.  It started when Burns made a comment about how fellow co-host Watson was the only one wearing a light-colored suit. No problem so far, right? That was just the start of it.  “As long as I get a text from my wife that says I look good,” Watson said.  “That's not the text she sent me,” Burns said in response. The rest of the crew exploded with laughs and “OOOOOs” before the show went to a commercial break.  When the show was back both Watson and Burns were off the screen. Watson walked back to the table moments later “Did you have him keep your wife's name out his mouth,” Host Chris Doering said? ROTM CFP Predictions UGA OSU TCU Tennessee Michigan  USC LSU Alabama  Clemson  Utah The college football playoff is right around the corner. As time goes on the top teams are becoming obvious, let's take a look: #1 Georgia looks like they haven’t skipped a beat from last season, as they haven’t had a close game yet.  #2 Ohio State is still undefeated and might have the best offense in the country. If Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Treyveon Henderson can come back healthy, this team really could win the National Championship.  #3 TCU has had an impressive season in the Big 12. After an impressive win at Texas with Arch Manning and many other 5-star Texas recruits and commits, TCU jumps Michigan in the CFP rankings. Soon everyone in New England will be holding up a “Don’t worry, be ZAPPE” sign, especially if he keeps playing like he did on Sunday. When Brian Hoyer Stepped in for Mac Jones I thought the season was over. But, when Bailey Zappe came in for him in Green Bay (and outplayed Aaron Rodgers) he had some flashes of “the guy”. Detroit was different, I’m not sure if I believed in Zappe simply out of a mix of desperation and insanity or if I actually thought he could win this game. But he played damn close to perfection in the Patriots 29-0 win, besides the interception that Nelson “Melted Butter Hands” Agholor couldn’t catch and tipped right to Deshon Elliott. Other than that, there were not a lot of ‘yell at the TV moments because your quarterback is an idiot’ like we had with Mac a few times this year.  I would be remiss if I were to talk about the offense and not mention Rhamondre Stevenson. No Mac, no problem? Not so fast, but Bailey Zappe could be a guy.  The Patriots fell victim to Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay on Sunday, 27-24 in overtime. All things considered, the game turned out much better than most Patriot fans expected with Mac Jones out. Brian Hoyer was slated to start and did until Isaiah Wynn decided to become a revolving door and let Rashan Gary blow up his shoulder.  In stepped Bailey Zappe, a fourth-round pick out of Western Kentucky. In his last season at WKU, he passed for over 5,900 yards and 62 touchdowns, which are both NCAA records.  Zappe overall played well over expectations, completing 10 of 15 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown.  Much like Mac last year, Zappe was not given the opportunity to really let the ball fly. Matt Patricia could be one of the worst play-callers in the NFL.  He was a decent defensive coordinator back in his first-stint with the Patriots, winning a couple Super Bowls.  But when he was ‘announced’ as the offensive coordinator people should’ve been concerned, puzzled and BAFFLED at the decision. As a Patriots fan, WHAT IN GOD'S NAME IS BILL DOING????? Did we see this guy in Detroit? I mean cool, guy’s a rocket scientist, but he can’t call an offense for shit.  Calling a 3 yard out to Jakobi Meyers every play won’t get you in the end zone. I do like, however, the deep shots that Mac took to Devante Parker and Jonnu Smith.  The offense has been so one dimensional ever since Brady left; we’ve had a decent-to-good running back room, but the passing offense hasn’t been there.  Mac showed some flashes of ‘good quarterbacking’ last year, but wasn’t really given any great opportunities to throw the ball downfield with John McDaniels’ patented 3rd and 26 screen p...
